As many of you know, one word summed up 2007 and that was
RAIN. In my playing career, I have not known any summer come to
equal 2007 for not only the amount of rain but also when it fell.
Despite the number of games that were cancelled, the number that
were conceded dropped to a league low in the 2nd XI competition
WELL DONE to all Clubs. The League welcomed Colwall, Himley and
Worcester Nomads, all of whom made a super addition to the
standard of cricket being played.
On the playing front the 1st XI competition was a 3 horse race for
most of the season that turned into a duel between Redditch &
Stourbridge, both of who fielded very youthful sides. In a turn of
events that would have read well in a Dickensian novel, Stourbridge
won on the field, but lost it in the Committee room for nonattendance
at the Leagues AGM. (This rule has since been replaced
with a financial penalty). In the 2nd XI competition, there was a
completely opposite scenario with the league being dominated by
Kidderminster for the whole season. Stourbridge again featured as
they finished runners up again.
The presentation night was again well attended and there were some
very well deserved awards for some promising under 17 cricketers
from member Clubs. Watch out for Josh Banks, Dan Platt, Steve
Game and Tom Gee in the future. Bromsgrove won the “Spirit of
Cricket” award, as the Club that most ably demonstrates all the
attributes that the Sunday League was set up for.
